McCreary County, Kentucky Partners with the USARA |
3/15/2011 |
The USARA is proud to have partnered with McCreary County.
McCreary County is located in Southeastern Kentucky at the south end of the Daniel Boone National Forest and the north end of the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area. We also share Cumberland Falls with neighboring Whitley County and have a northeast access to Lake Cumberland.
McCreary County was the 120th, and the last, county in Kentucky to be formed in March of 1912 and named for then Governor James B McCreary. In our 100 year history, McCreary County has been influenced greatly by the timber and coal industries, which shape our history, heritage and culture. McCreary County is also largely undeveloped with the US Forest Service and Park Service owning much of our lands. This allows locals and visitors to experience nature in a unique way. Our cost of living and our taxes are relatively low, our people are welcoming and our landscape is scenic and rustic.

Mad Water inks a deal to become the official pack of the USARA |
3/14/2011 |

This pack from Mad Water is fully waterproof – even submersible to 16 feet!
Maybe you don’t need a hydration pack at the bottom of the pool, but it’s nice
to know that you have the ultimate in real waterproof protection for your gear.
And that’s just the beginning…
The overall design of the hydration pack
is shaped for a secure and comfortable fit – staying close to your back and
contoured over your shoulders, but away from your neck. This unique design
provides a lower center of gravity to the pack, increasing the comfort and
stability of the person wearing the pack. And when cycling with the Sports
Hydration Pack, loosening the tension on the extra long shoulder straps of this
aerodynamic pack allow the rider to further lower his/her center of gravity and
increase the stability and control of the bike. Being prepared for any
environmental conditions, the lightweight padded back and shoulder straps are
designed for wet or dry comfort. And the list of additional features seems to go
on for miles. |

The two brands are also proud to sponsor the winning Collegiate team from the USARA Collegiate and Sprint Nationals in the National Championship race and all qualifying events.
“The USARA is excited that both Highgear and Granger’s signed on again for the 2011 season , since both companies make products that should be standard equipment for all adventure racers,” says Troy Farrar, USARA President. “Highgear provides reliable, value-oriented timepieces that are packed full of easy-to-use features that adventure racers desire. And Granger’s environmentally safe washes and waterproofers are a must for maintaining all technical gear that racers put through the ringer during race season.”
“We are proud to continue our support of the USARA, the premier adventure racing organization in the country, and the elite athletes who participate in this exciting sport,” says Todd Vore, President of Implus.
Considered the "Heart & Soul" of Adventure Racing in the United States, the USARA Adventure Race National Championship will be held October 6 - 8 in Cumberland Falls State Park, Kentucky. Co-ed teams of three compete in 45 USARA regional qualifying events across the U.S. for a chance to battle it out for the title of USARA Adventure Race National Champion. Teams are required to navigate a series of checkpoints using only a map and compass to guide them while transitioning between several disciplines such as trail running/trekking, mountain biking, paddling and orienteering.
The USARA Collegiate and Sprint Nationals will be held on May 21 in Burnet, Texas. All members of collegiate teams must be enrolled in at least one college class during the year of the championship. Highgear and Granger’s will support the winning Collegiate team in their pursuit of the National Championship in October. For more information on the USARA and its competitions, visit www.usara.com.

Unbridled Kentucky Adventure |
3/1/2011 |
The USARA Adventure Race National Championship will be headquartered out of Cumberland Falls State Resort Park, one of the most popular state parks in Kentucky. After a $2 million renovation in 2006, the park was one of the first two in the state to achieve a 3-star rating from AAA. DuPont Lodge features solid hemlock beams, knotty pine paneling and massive stone fireplaces - and free WiFi. Spectators will enjoy browsing the Visitor's Center and Gift Shop, and will be entertained with live music Thursday night and planned hikes, crafts and other recreational events on Friday and Saturday.
Outside the lodge, there is a large observation deck overlooking the Cumberland River, above the 125' wide curtain of water that falls 68' into the boulder-strewn gorge below. Teams might consider staying through the full moon on October 11th, when they may have the opportunity to witness the only moonbow that occurs in the western hemisphere! Cumberland Falls is merely the largest of several spectacular waterfalls teams will visit over the course of the race.
The race will also take teams through the Daniel Boone National Forest and Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area, with one of the highest concentrations of natural bridges in the eastern U.S. The Big South Fork is one of only five federally protected, free-flowing National Rivers, so designated for its historic and scenic value. The wide open views afforded by overlooks above the steep-walled gorge are the stuff of paintings and postcards. Teams will want to carry a camera, as they will visit several spectacular arches over the course of the race. Spectators will enjoy learning more about the history and geography of the area through planned interpretive hikes led by rangers from the US Forest Service and National Park Service.
Flying Squirrel Adventures will be producing the 2011 championship and Stephanie Ross has been selected as the race director. We are very excited to have Stephanie as our race director. Her background in orienteering and adventure racing are a real plus. Add in the fact that she is one of the top race directors in the country and those ingredients should yield a top notch course.
When we say this will be a family-friendly event, we mean it. Besides the live entertainment, interpretive hikes, kids crafts, and other planned recreational events, spectators will receive their own swag bag with course information and maps, and discount coupons for area restaurants and attractions, which include horseback riding, rafting, a zip line, and train ride on the Big South Fork Scenic Railway.
With the generous assistance and support of Kentucky State Parks and the Kentucky Office of Adventure Tourism, the USARA is generating a lot of attention for the 2011 Adventure Race National Championship, and we expect the event to be well-covered by local, regional and national media, creating positive exposure for teams and their sponsors. Remember that masters and collegiate teams are invited to race alongside regional qualifiers and all teams will go home with memories of a beautiful and challenging course.
